Honda CRF450R Motorbike Profile

The 2002 Honda CRF450R is a 450cc class 4-stroke engine-equipped motocross racing motorbike. Due to the influence of environmental problems, it was introduced in the midst of 4-stroke motocross racing. Structurally, the displacement ratio of 2-stroke and 4-stroke is 1:2, but due to racing regulations, it was possible to participate in the class in which the 2-stroke CR250R competed. A water-cooled single-cylinder OHC 4-valve engine with a displacement of 449cc was mounted on an aluminum twin-tube frame and combined with a 5-stage return transmission. As a racer model, the specifications have been changed every year, and the main ones are fuel injection equipment (2009 model), dual muffler equipment (2013 model), self-starter standard equipment (2018 2020 model) and the adoption of selectable torque control (2020 model). The full model change is for each year model of 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2021. In the meantime, it continued to undergo minor specification changes almost every year. Enduro race models (CRF450X/CRF450RX) were also lined up, but in 2018, CRF450R-based trails for public roads, CRF450L were released (separate items for each). *The CRF450R is a competition-only car, and cannot be run on public roads after obtaining a number.

The prototype that competed in the 2000 All Japan Motocross Championship was released as a commercial racer. Since 2001, the CRF450R has also competed in the AMA Motocross Championship (USA).

Honda has improved the competitive power of the motocross competition motorcycle “Honda CRF450R” equipped with a high-performance water-cooled 4-stroke engine, and released it from Saturday, August 3rd 2002. The CR series equipped with a water-cooled 2-stroke engine will be matured, and the “CR250R” was released on August 3 (Sat) 2002, and the “CR125R” and “CR85R/R2” was released on October 15 (Tue) 2002.

This CR series is a competition-only motorcycle used in motocross races held not only in Japan but also around the world.
In the 2002 AMA Supercross Series held in the United States, Ricky Carmichael on the CR250R won the series championship, proving its high potential.
The 2003 model CRF450R, CR250R, and CR125R make the most of the know-how cultivated through racing, and further mature the engine and undercarriage. I also changed the stripes. The 2003 model year CR85R/85R2 has a renewed appearance of the CRF/CR series. In addition, the displacement has been increased to achieve even higher combat power.

CRF450R

Engine

By changing the valve timing and lift amount, torque has been improved in the low speed range. In the intake system, the air cleaner case opening area has been expanded and the shape of the connecting tube has been changed to improve output from low to high rev ranges.

Frame

The rigidity of the rear upper bracket, down tube, and lower tube of the aluminum twin-tube frame has been increased. Furthermore, the collar diameter of the engine hanger has also been changed to review the rigidity of the tightening part, achieving excellent cornering performance.

Undercarriage

The front fork has an inner tube diameter of φ47mm and a newly designed gas-liquid separation cartridge damper. The stroke has been changed from 305mm to 315mm, and the damper’s damping force characteristics have been changed to improve shock absorption and ride comfort. Realized.

CR250R

Engine

The shape of the RC valve has been reviewed, and the shape of the valve housing and exhaust port has been changed to reduce clearance as much as possible and improve output in the high and low rev ranges. Reed valve changed from 4-leaf type to 8-leaf type. In addition, the intake air flow is straightened to improve the response in the low rotation range.

Frame

Ride comfort has been improved by changing the shape of the frame body gusset and cylinder head hanger. In addition, the rigidity of the rear cushion bracket has been increased to improve the operability of the rear suspension.

Undercarriage

The front suspension pressure side valve has been changed to φ34mm, and together with the change in the damping force characteristics of the rear damper, shock absorption and ride comfort have been improved.

CR125R

Engine

The carburetor main bore was enlarged from φ36mm to φ38mm, and the reed valve was enlarged and a sub-reed valve was added to increase the output in the entire range. In addition, by changing the cylinder port timing, scavenging port shape, exhaust passage shape, and RC valve shape, the engine performance has been greatly improved.

Frame

By changing the gusset shape of the frame body, we are aiming for flexibility and reduction of impact from the road surface.

Undercarriage

For the rear suspension, the spring rate of the damper has been changed, and the damping characteristics have also been changed. Convergence against pitching is improved.

CR85R/R2

Engine

The displacement has been increased from 82.9cm3 to 84.7cm3, and the engine output has been improved over the entire range. In addition, along with the change in engine characteristics, the driven sprocket has been changed to achieve more torqueful driving.

Frame

The strength of the frame is improved by changing the plate thickness of the pivot part and the step part.

Undercarriage

The front suspension reduces friction and improves operability and shock absorption in gaps. The link ratio of the rear suspension has been reviewed, and the damping force characteristics and front/rear balance have been optimized to achieve even better handling stability.
