Honda CBX400 Custom is a American-style touring sports bike equipped with an air-cooled, 4-cycle, DOHC, 16-valve, in-line 4-cylinder engine (398cc). It was released on March 24th 1983.

The Honda CBX400 Custom is an American sports cruiser released in March 1983. The engine is an air-cooled 4-stroke in-line 4-cylinder DOHC 4-valve engine with a maximum output of 48ps. Therefore, it is easy to think that it is the same engine as the European sports CBX400F / Integra, but in fact it was a different type of unit with different bore and stroke. In addition to that, it could be said that although it was called the CBX400, it was in a different system from the CBX400F/Integra because it was a shaft drive and the brake was not an “inboard type”. The clutch was hydraulic, the ignition device was full transistor, and the generator was brushless.
The engine installed in this CBX400 Custom has achieved a compact combustion chamber by adopting a narrow-angle valve arrangement. Furthermore, by installing a bi-starter type carburetor with high intake efficiency and adopting Honda’s original hydraulic valve clearance auto adjuster mechanism, etc., 48 PS / 10, 500 rpm, high output of 120 horsepower per liter is demonstrated.
In addition, the overall size and width of the engine has been reduced through the placement of a compact but highly efficient forced air-cooled AC generator behind the engine, the adoption of a compact hydraulic clutch, and a power transmission mechanism that does not use a primary shaft. In addition to narrowing the body, the engine is positioned closer to the front of the vehicle to ensure optimum front-to-rear weight balance and excellent steering stability.
Furthermore, the quietness of the shaft drive combined with the low vibration of the full rubber mounted engine realizes a quiet and comfortable ride.
As a result, Honda’s 400cc class sports bikes now have 14 models and 15 types, meeting the needs of a wider range of customers.
