In December 1982, the Honda CBX650 Custom was released as a new model for 1983. It was the fourth model in the CBX series, which began in 1981, following the 400F, 400F Integra, and 550F Integra, and was a “custom” model prior to the CBX 400 Custom released in March 1983. At this time, Honda also used the name “custom” for American-style vehicles, and the Honda CBX400 custom also had a truly American handlebar and seat, but this CBX650 custom did not have that kind of configuration. , The steering wheel position is slightly high and the seat height is low. The air-cooled 4-stroke in-line 4-cylinder DOHC engine with a displacement of 655cc is a new design, and the tappet clearance is adjusted by a hydraulic auto adjuster mechanism, which improves maintainability. The front suspension is equipped with an anti-nose dive mechanism that responds to brake torque. The caliper of the double disc brake on the front wheel was a dual piston type.

The newly designed engine installed in this Honda CBX650 custom has achieved a compact combustion chamber by adopting a narrow angle valve arrangement and improving the shape of the piston head. The features of this hydraulic valve clearance auto-adjuster mechanism are that the tappet clearance is non-adjustable, which improves maintainability, reduces mechanical noise, and is not possible with conventional oil tappets. This mechanism was jointly developed with Nittan Valve Co., Ltd.
In addition, the forced air-cooled AC generator (brushless compact type) placed at the rear of the engine, a compact hydraulic clutch, and a power transmission mechanism that does not use a primary shaft, etc., are designed to reduce the size and width of the engine. At the same time, the engine is placed closer to the front of the vehicle body to achieve an optimal front-to-rear weight balance.
The compactness and narrow width of these engines also contribute to the weight reduction of the frame, and together with the adoption of a compact type oil reservoir tank, lightweight aluminum cast wheels, carburetor, etc., the dry weight of the car body is 197Kg. , has achieved a weight reduction approaching the 400cc class. In addition, the engine is fully rubber-mounted to reduce vibration transmitted to the frame, resulting in a comfortable ride.
The front wheels use a brake torque response type anti-dive mechanism (TRAC) and double discs. Honda’s unique dual-piston caliper provides excellent braking power.
