Honda CB900 Hornet is a large naked road sports bike equipped with a water-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, in-line, 4-cylinder, 900cc engine that has smooth and powerful characteristics from low/mid-speed range to high-speed range in a lightweight and compact frame. It was released on Thursday, October 4th, 2001 in Japan.
This Honda CB900 Hornet is the third model in the Naked Road Sports “Hornet Series” following the “Hornet 250” launched in 1996 and the Hornet 600 launched in 1998. It is a model full of functional beauty that provides not only the fun of extraordinary touring, but also the fun of driving in practical urban areas for users who are full of sports mind.
The engine is based on the water-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, in-line, 4-cylinder, 900cc engine that was installed in the CBR900RR released in Europe in 1998, but the CV carburetor is equipped with PGM-FI (electronic Controlled fuel injection device), etc., and the output characteristics are easy to handle in a wide range of applications, from city driving to touring using highways.
The body is based on the lightweight and compact Hornet 600 frame, and by reviewing the frame plate thickness, etc., we have achieved a comprehensive performance improvement.
The styling consists of a glamorous curved surface from the fuel tank to the rear fender. The muffler, which is pulled up to the rear of the vehicle, and the extra-thick rear tires give it a strong presence and bold styling. Two body colors are available: Force Silver Metallic, which emphasizes fearlessness, and Italian Red, which is dynamic.

Main features of the CB900 Hornet
Equipped with an engine that prioritizes response in a wide speed range
The engine is based on the water-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, in-line, 4-cylinder, 900cc installed in the CBR900RR released in 1998. For the CBR900RR, which sought the ultimate in performance, we performed naked sports-like tuning that emphasized the feeling of acceleration and performance in the low and medium speed range. Prioritizing high response in a wide range of speeds, it achieves engine characteristics suitable for everyday enjoyment.
Using a mono-backbone of a large rectangular section steel pipe on a lightweight and simple diamond frame
The frame adopts the same diamond frame as the Hornet 600 and a mono backbone of large rectangular cross-section steel pipes. In order to respond to the overall performance improvement by increasing the displacement to 900cc, we are reviewing the plate thickness etc. In addition, the steering head is reinforced, and the rectangular cross-section down tube extending from the steering head is connected to the intermediate cross pipe at the engine mount. By fixing the frame and engine firmly, you can get an excellent cornering feeling.
Adoption of advanced digital control PGM-FI (Electronically Controlled Fuel Injection System) realizes agile response
The fuel injection system was changed from the CV carburetor used in the 1998 model CBR900RR to PGM-FI, which compactly integrates the ECU (electronic control unit) and digital electronic ignition mechanism. By precisely controlling the amount of fuel injection, it achieves agile response and smooth output characteristics.
Adoption of an exhaust system aimed at reducing exhaust emissions
The exhaust system adopts a secondary air introduction device (air injection system). Combined with the precise control of fuel injection by PGM-FI, it purifies exhaust gas by promoting the combustion of unburned gas and complies with domestic exhaust gas regulations.
Undercarriage settings for various driving conditions
For the front suspension, a φ43mm cartridge type upright fork is used. It exhibits high rigidity while being lightweight, and realizes an excellent handling sensation.
The monoshock suspension adopted for the rear achieves a high degree of balance between outstanding rigidity and controllability. In addition, a separate reservoir is used for the rear damper, and the preload of the spring is adjusted in seven stages, providing characteristics that correspond to various driving conditions.
An effective anti-theft device
H・I・S・S (Honda Ignition Security System) is adopted as a theft deterrent system. In addition to making it impossible to start the engine with anything other than the genuine key, the 24-hour indicator lamp flashes by button operation, improving theft deterrence effect.
