2NE1 first appeared in the song “Lollipop”, a commercial campaign for LG Electronics alongside Big Bang. Their debut single, “Fire” was released on May 6, 2009. Since then, the group has released two eponymous extended plays: 2NE1 (2009) and 2NE1 (2011), as well as two studio albums: To Anyone and Crush. Their first extended play spawned the hit single “I Don’t Care” which earned the group the ‘Song of the Year’ award at the 2008 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Subsequent singles such as “Go Away”, “Lonely” and “I Am the Best” also achieved similar success, with “I Am the Best” again earning 2NE1 the ‘Song of the Year’ award for the second time at the same event in 2011.

2NE1 officially debuted in Japan in September 2011 with a mini album entitled Nolza. Since then, the group has released one studio album titled Collection and two singles in Japan. In 2012, The New York Times named 2NE1’s performance at the Prudential Center in New Jersey as one of the “Best Concerts of 2012”. In October 2012, Zack Greenburg of Forbes magazine noted that 2NE1 had sold 27 million digital downloads worldwide. In total, the group has reportedly sold 66.5 million digital and physical records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.
