After releasing the ROG Phone 5 gaming phone that we reviewed in this article last June, at the end of this year ASUS is again introducing a new ROG Phone series labeled ROG Phone 5s. And the highest variant, ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro has entered the editorial desk and is ready for us to review even though in a relatively short time.

Carrying the name ROG (Republic of Gamers) immediately becomes a burden for this phone so that it can become a benchmark in the gaming realm on mobile devices. This has been tried by previous products by maximizing the existing hardware specifications, such as using the best chipset available when the phone was introduced, to the most extreme is by placing buttons and ports that make it easier to play games.

The ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro is the same. After 6 months, of course the world of chipsets has developed, although not too significantly. This phone still tries to display the best chipset in its class for now.

Next, on the side of internal memory capacity, it has also been presented in the best size, namely 512 GB. Not to mention RAM, battery and so on. Without further ado, check out our review below.

ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro Review

Design and Sales Package

Before discussing the overall design of the phone, there is one interesting thing, namely the packaging of this phone. This phone’s box carries many squares. Not a simple box that is usually used by other phones. The way to open it is also unique, namely by pulling the right and left ends. Even then, we won’t find the phone directly, but rather a comic-like illustration that is quite interesting.

In this sales package, in addition to the phone, you can also find mandatory accessories such as a 65W charger adapter complete with a USB Type-C data cable, a hard case to protect the phone, an AeroActive cooler and some spare rubber seals to cover the exposed holes, so that they don’t get dusty.

Moving on to the phone, just like the previous Rog Phone, most of the phone’s parts are protected by a layer of hard glass, making it glossy. There is a small section on the back cover that can display a number of logos, such as the ROG logo or other images that we can later adjust from the Armoury Crate feature.

This phone can be said to take a sturdy and very “manly” concept, through a thickness that makes it feel big, both when seen and when held.

It makes sense, because in addition to carrying a chipset with better heat dissipation technology than previous products and a large capacity battery, this phone must also include a number of built-in touch buttons, such as the back button (L + B) and an additional charger port that does not interfere with the position when we are gaming.

AMOLED Screen with Extra Protection

As a gaming phone, the ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro also carries a screen that is already qualified. Especially in terms of resolution and a high refresh rate of 144Hz. Although there are not too many games that support high frame rates.

Regarding AMOLED with a resolution of 2448 x 1080 pixels, of course, on the display side, this screen will spoil the eyes. However, the sensitivity to changes in temperature when playing games which often presents problems with responsiveness is also something that cannot be avoided.

Fortunately, this phone has a number of additional accessories that will make your gaming experience even more exciting. Our recommendation is the ROG Kunai 3 which is specifically for the ROG Phone 5s, this accessory will move all virtual buttons to physical buttons. But it is sold separately.

And as a phone that will be used for extreme activities, the screen of this phone has also been protected with Gorilla Glass Victus.

Gaming Performance

It has been mentioned previously that this phone carries the best chipset in its class today, namely the flagship chipset made by Qualcomm, namely the Snapdragon 888+. Together with the Adreno 660 GPU, this chipset has experienced overclocking or increased performance from the regular version, even up to 35% better than the previous generation ROG Phone series.

Thus, this cellphone can be said to be safe and capable of handling all the needs of today’s mobile games. Up to the right-aligned settings, for example. Because it is also equipped with the best RAM in the cellphone class, namely 18GB LPDDR5 RAM, as well as 512GB of storage.

Now this is the most important thing, the origin of the Snapdragon 888 family does produce quite significant heat compared to other series. Thus, it is one of the challenges for vendors to be able to create the most effective heat dissipation system, or reduce the performance of this chipset.

The second option was certainly not taken by ASUS, in fact they overclocked aka utilizing the SD 888+ series. And ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro introduces a new GameCool 5 cooling system that uses a new and more optimal thermal structure.

The results certainly vary greatly, depending on the hardware performance at that time. Therefore, we appreciate ROG PHONE’s decision to include the AeroActive Cooler in its sales package. Because with this small accessory, the cooling in the cellphone chamber will run even better.

As explained by the ROG phone, the components that cause heat are placed in such a way that they are in the middle of the phone. Thus, it does not interfere with users while playing, and can also be directly desired directly at the hot spot by the AeroActive Cooler.

The Camera Is Not Just There

Moving on to the photography (and videography) side, this phone is also equipped with a rear camera with a 3-camera configuration, consisting of a main camera with a Sony IMX686 64MP f/1.8 sensor, a 13MP f/2.4 ultrawide camera and a 5MP f/2.0 macro camera.

While on the front, this phone uses a 24MP camera with Quad Bayer f/2.45 technology which is equivalent to a 2.7mm lens. This phone’s camera is capable of producing great photos even in low light, and can also be used to record 4K and even 8K videos.

Large Battery

ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro carries a large capacity battery. With dual battery technology, the total battery capacity of this phone is 6000 mAh.

To charge effectively, this phone also carries 65W fast charging technology, which is believed to be able to charge from zero to full in just 52 minutes.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, this phone is here a bit late in 2021. If only earlier, it is not impossible for this phone to be included as one of the candidates for the best mobile phone for gaming 2021. Loading all the best things on the market today, the ASUS ROG Phone 5s Pro deserves to be called the Flagship of Mobile Gamers.
