2024 OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G Review

Design and Display

OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G is the highest variant of the Reno12 Series. Unlike the Reno12 5G variant which carries a 3D curved screen on the right and left sides, this Pro variant carries a screen that looks flat but actually carries a 3D curved screen on 4 sides. Also the bottom and top. But still using the usual cellphone reinforcement, which is equivalent on all sides.

In other words, there is no visible curved part, but when used we can feel and appreciate the curve brought by this screen. Is this also related to the type of screen protection carried? We can’t answer that for sure. Because as we know, both Reno12 Series carry screen protection from different manufacturers.

The Reno12 Pro 5G screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Which is proven to be strong even when used to hammer nails into a wooden surface. We’ve tried it on one occasion. Check IG @pulsachannel to see the video. But that doesn’t mean all phones with the same screen protection can do it.

This is because the Reno12 Pro 5G is designed in such a way that combines not only Corning Glass protection, but also the use of a high-strength alloy frame and a bionic cushion sponge system. The combination of the three is called by OPPO as the All-Round Armored technique.

The screen protector will withstand direct impacts to the surface of the phone screen, the Alloy Frame will protect the edges of the phone from impacts, while the Bionic Sponge design will overcome impacts between components and the frame so that the phone is not damaged when dropped and can still be used in emergency conditions.

But again, we do not recommend you to buy and bully this device because in essence this phone is still an electronic device with its shortcomings. As proof, OPPO still includes a silicon case that is designed in such a way as to reduce impact.

Especially for parts that are not protected, such as the back cover. Seeing the All-Round Armor design that OPPO is touting, we have to accept that the back cover is a vulnerable part, although for minimal scratches it can be avoided because the design still carries the previous Reno-style coloring technique.

ColorOS and AI Features

OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G carries ColorOS 14 based on Android 14. For veteran OPPO users, this OS is certainly no stranger. And of course, they already have their own tricks to optimize it. However, it must be admitted, when we first tried it on the Reno12 Pro 5G, we felt that there was animation that was degraded compared to the previous Reno series. Hopefully this can be eliminated with the next software update.

Through the Reno12 Pro 5G, OPPO introduces a number of features that involve AI in them. Not only those that are generative, such as those we usually find in the photo and gallery sections, but also areas that are very useful for everyday life.

If you think the generative AI feature can already be felt in the lower series, such as the A3 Pro, then in this Reno12 Series, OPPO has added a number of new features. In addition to AI Eraser, which on this phone has entered version 2.0, there are also additional AI Studio, AI Toolbox, AI Clear Face, and AI Best Face.

AI Eraser 2.0, will allow us to remove unwanted objects in our photos, then cover them with a background generated or produced by the system. The results make sense, and are quite smooth, so they look convincing.

AI Clear Face, will work to fix all the faces of the photo objects captured by the camera. For example, a group photo of 10 people. All faces will be fixed, without any remaining, for example due to differences in distance or light at certain angles.

AI Best Face, will work to fix a photo of a collection of faces so that all faces that appear in the photo have open eyes. This is possible with the Live Photo feature on the Reno 12 Pro camera, which will look for moments before and after the photo is captured. For example, when photographing 3 faces, one of them closes his eyes when the photo is taken, the system will look for a moment where he still has his eyes open, then combine it with the photo when it was taken so that one photo with the best face is produced.

AI Studio is a mini application that allows users to create a single portrait photo based on existing templates, combined with the desired face. It seems paid because every time we generate AI photos through AI Studio we have to “pay” with a number of points. But of course not, because we will get free points every certain period of time.

We suspect that this policy is implemented to reduce excessive or excessive use. Given that all AI features on this phone are cloud-based. So it is feared that it will disrupt the existing server when everyone is able to do it freely without any limitations.

Meanwhile, AI Toolkit is the use of AI tools provided by Google to be implemented in various features. Especially in a number of Google services, such as Chrome, Youtube and so on. With this feature we can find links to AI functions such as summarizing writing on a website.

Then, in addition to the photo side, the AI feature is also embedded in the voice recording or built-in voice recorder. Where we can summarize a long audio recording, even into a pointer so that we don’t need to transcribe, let alone manually summarize the conversation in the recording.

We have discussed this feature in the following tips (link). Yes, unfortunately until this article was written, this feature only supports 3 languages, namely English, Indian and Chinese.

Finally, on the side of this unique feature, there is also Beaconlink. This feature allows the cellphone to function to make calls without the need for a cellular signal or internet by WiFi. Can be used between cellphones.

Reno12 series, including Reno12 5G and Reno12 Pro 5G, within a distance of up to 200 meters provided that there are no obstacles or interference.

This feature uses advanced Bluetooth technology. We can use it in an emergency when at a concert that is crowded with cellular users, for example. To coordinate a meeting at a certain gathering point with friends.

Chipset and Memory

This review moves on to the chipset section, where the OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 7300-Energy chipset. It is a custom chipset resulting from Mediatek’s collaboration with OPPO that provides better power efficiency, especially for a number of Gen-AI features and features related to power saving and further collaboration with SuperVOOC charging technology.

The Reno12 Pro 5G is also equipped with 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM which can be upgraded to 24 GB with a memory expansion feature of up to 12 GB. Meanwhile, for storage media, this phone carries 256 GB of UFS 3.1 type memory.

AI Portrait Expert Camera

Carrying the previous Reno trend, the OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G still carries a portrait camera embedded with AI in it. So it’s natural that some feel inconsistencies at the beginning of the launch of this product.

This will be fixed through periodic OS updates. Because if you look at the quality of the camera it carries, there is actually no problem.

This phone carries a composition of 3 cameras as the main camera composition. Namely two 50MP cameras and one 8MP camera. The two 50MP cameras carried are cameras with Samsung ISOCELL JN5 sensors. Serves as a wide camera and telephoto camera, while the 8MP camera with Sony IMX355 sensor, serves as a Super Wide camera.

Here are some photo results after the phone has undergone an OS update 2 times. We are quite satisfied with the results during our review of the Reno12 Pro 5G. Although there are some things that can be fixed in the next OS update.

Battery and SuperVOOC

The OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G has a satisfactory battery life, at least during our review. With the note, we use it as the main phone, connected to the Telkomsel network, and WiFi at all times, and also used it for daily activities, including ordering food and online vehicles, as well as chatting at all times and playing games.

The combination of an efficient chipset, battery capacity and a number of AI features in it make the phone last 2 days without charging at all.

The battery of this phone has a capacity of 5000 mAh, and supports 80W fast charging with a charger adapter, and the default cable.

Conclusion

Although not created to be thrown, the Reno 12 Pro 5G is OPPO’s latest portrait camera phone that is durable, and we have proven it through this review. Including being able to be used even though the screen is wet from rainwater.

In addition to the fairly high price, a number of AI capabilities that are present and still have limitations are one of the things that are quite annoying. However, the presence of Gen-AI features on this phone must be appreciated. Because they are future features that will continue to exist on our beloved phones.
