OPPO Reno8 Series second batch officially arrived. Introducing two products consisting of OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G and Reno8 Z 5G. This time we had the opportunity to review one of them, namely the Reno8 Pro 5G variant.
When it was first announced that it would enter Indonesia, this product became the favorite product of the Reno8 series line because it brought additional new hardware related to the imaging process, namely MariSilicon X.
We can’t wait to see how this additional NPU works on a device that is different from the Find X5 Pro. Both from the target market, price, to the main chipset used.

OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G Reviews
Design
OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G takes a design approach that resembles a flagship. This can be seen from the back cover which uses unibody material, shaped in such a way as to create a slowly different height area from the balance point of the phone towards the camera hole.
What users can feel is an interesting sensation because they are able to use the phone comfortably even though they only hold the back of the phone with one finger resting on the hill above.
Hands don’t get tired easily. And use with this model can be done with either the right or left hand. We can appreciate a design like this when using it for a long time and for many purposes.
The coloring on the back cover itself is made simple by displaying reflective colors. Not easy to capture using a camera. But it looks elegant and luxurious.
And because almost all parts are made of unibody metal, OPPO made additional efforts by providing antenna lines in several parts, so that they can run better without interference from the materials used.
This product is based on the design of the previous flagship phone, so we won’t be able to find some features that might still be adopted by mid-range and high-end products. For example, a 3.5 mm audio jack.
120Hz OLED screen
The OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G carries a screen that stretches almost all the way to the front of the phone. It looks beautiful, as well as satisfying when we interact with the screen of this phone. There is no longer a dark space at the bottom, because the phone screen almost touches this part.
Interestingly, this phone screen carries a 120 Hz refresh rate which is sure to pamper you when browsing applications or social media timelines. Meanwhile, for games, it seems that there are not many games that support frame rates that utilize such high refresh rates.
Several applications that utilize this screen space are highlighted when we open the screen settings. Including the optimized O Haptic feature so that we can feel the sensation of feedback from the screen when we interact with it.
Software
OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G comes with ColorOS 12.1 and is scheduled to get ColorOS 13 this year. However, we cannot confirm whether it has just received the Beta version or is already official.
As usual, ColorOS offers many interesting things. Starting from the display, to the use of internal memory space as RAM expansion.
Dimensions Chipset and MariSilicon X NPU
The Reno8 Pro 5G is powered by a chipset made by Mediatek, namely the Dimensity 8100 Max, which carries 8 CPU cores, 4 in the form of cortex A78, and the remaining 4 in the form of cortex A55. It is already a high-end standard for CPU units.
Having a 5nm fabrication, many components with other functions can be embedded, although they are considered to carry a less than optimal ISP.
Fortunately, OPPO has embedded an additional NPU to overcome this ISP capability. Namely MariSilicon X, which was previously present in the OPPO Find X5 Pro with a Qualcomm chipset.
The MariSilicon X NPU itself is widely explained by OPPO, present as an accelerator for processing camera results. No longer relying on the ISP or image signal processor built into the main chipset, the activity of capturing images, processing them and then presenting them into a photo will be done through this NPU.
With this NPU, the Reno8 Pro can produce photos with more efficient hardware usage, faster time and more solid results. Without draining the cellphone battery quickly or the low light shooting process can be faster and more accurate.
In terms of overall hardware performance, the OPPO Reno8 Pro looks superior. Even with the support of RAM as large as a flagship cellphone, which is 12 GB plus RAM expansion capabilities and 255 GB of storage space, in terms of the readiness of this cellphone to play games, it can be said to be a flagship cellphone class.
Camera with Dual Flagship Sensor
In addition to the NPU, efforts to optimize the camera on the Reno8 Pro also occur through the selection of sensors on the front and rear cameras of this cellphone.
As we usually find on flagship class cellphones, the OPPO Reno8 Pro camera uses a Sony sensor, namely the IMX766 on the back. From a sensor with a resolution of 50MP we can get photos with good color, detail and lighting even when used in low light conditions.
Accompanied by an 8MP wide camera and a 2MP macro camera, these three lenses will work to produce photos according to your expectations.
On the front, aka the Selfie camera, the OPPO Reno8 Pro also carries a flagship sensor. The result of the collaboration between OPPO and Sony is the IMX709.
Still carrying Portrait Expert, this phone still has an AI portrait feature that will add to the beauty of the photo results. There is colorPortaitAi, also Bokeh flare AI that can be maximized when hunting for photos.
Battery and superVooc 80W
Once again we find one thing that makes this product closer to a flagship product. The SuperVooc 80W support which is currently still found in OPPO flagships, is also carried by the Reno8 Pro 5G.
Carrying a capacity of 4500 mAh, with system efficiency that can be said to be much better than the product a year earlier, the Reno8 Pro battery can last quite a long time. The most important DNA is that charging can be much faster.
Superior Audio?
Starting from our accidental listening to music through the phone’s built-in speakers at high volume, we saw a lot of potential in the Reno8 Pro, especially on the audio side.
After investigating, it turns out that OPPO has indeed tried a number of things related to the audio output of this phone. First, they embedded non-linear correction technology in its asymmetric stereo speakers.
The NLC algorithm increases the level of audio brightness or more precisely called clarity to high tones and frequencies.
The vocal sound that looks clear is one real example that we can feel. Without feeling like our ears are being stabbed due to frequencies and trebles that are too high. Solid and even without gain and bass booster like portable bluetooth speakers, the sound produced by the built-in speaker of this phone is good enough to be used as the main speaker in the room.
Secondly, on the side of Bluetooth codec support. This phone carries almost all Bluetooth codecs, both HD and low latency standards for gaming, for example.
Starting from SBC, AAC, LHDC, LDAC and all codecs from Qualcomm APTX. This helps those who want the highest quality from a bluetooth headset connection. So, the Reno8 Pro 5G is the right phone for audiophiles.
Next is the presence of Real HD Audio support, the result of OPPO’s collaboration with DIRAC Research. For those of you who want a customized audio output according to your taste, then this feature can be tried. Presenting audio presets that we often need.
The other OPPO Reno series:
CONCLUSION
During the initial introduction, we were very interested in seeing the capabilities of the MariSilicon X NPU on the Reno8 Pro, which in fact were well tested through a number of experiments to support this review. But behind that, the Reno8 Pro also has many interesting things including the audio side and also the smart design.
