Released: March 2022

Throughout 2022, Samsung has released many new cellphone models, namely the Galaxy M33 with a 5G-ready chipset, the Exynos 1280. Having relatively modern CPU specs, with a 5G modem that is ready to compete in the market, we are quite curious, how can this product be sold at only 4 million?

The Samsung Galaxy M33 5G is also designed with a relatively wide size. Bringing a fairly large screen span, to support multimedia needs, or for those who need to focus more on the files displayed on the screen, or experience a decrease in quality on the side of vision.

Samsung Galaxy M33 5G Reviews

Design and Sales Package

Before discussing the design of this cellphone which does look attractive, let’s discuss the sales package which has drawn mixed responses from reviewers so far. Starting from the movement to reduce electronic waste, this time Samsung has started offering its cellphone products in slimmer packaging and does not include a charger adapter in it. Inviting users to use the old cellphone adapter, or buy it separately.

We believe that this was not done to reduce production costs so that the M33 could be sold for only 4 million. But it’s quite unfortunate, considering that this cellphone actually carries 25W fast charging technology. Where this feature, like other fast charging features, can only be activated or utilized optimally if we use the appropriate adapter.

If this product is a flagship product, for example, of course consumers of the product will not hesitate to spend more money to get the appropriate charger adapter. But considering the market targeted by the M33 5G is a fairly reactive market, it is feared that this strategy is not suitable for this cellphone.

Just for information, the data cable carried by the Samsung M33 5G packaging also has a type C to Type C plug. Not a plug that is commonly used by old cellphone charger adapters. As if forcing us to buy a charger adapter that has the appropriate plug and supports 25W fast charging separately. What do you think?

Moving on to the design side of the phone, the Samsung Galaxy M33 5G is designed with a simple appearance. The back cover is given a monotone color, not many gradations. It looks glossy but not reflective like glass.

This coloring makes it look elegant, but unfortunately it still leaves a few fingerprint spots when our hands are wet with sweat. So we have to wipe the back cover often, or dry our hands.

There are 4 cameras on the back of this phone. Located in the corner on the upper left side. Apart from the camera, there are practically no other striking parts, except for the SAMSUNG writing in a non-striking color, following the coloring on the back cover.

This is possible because the layout of the fingerprint sensor is not stored on the back cover. Either it can be placed on the screen if this phone has an AMOLED screen, or on the power button (on the right side) if the screen panel is not AMOLED. And, that’s right on the M33 5G the fingerprint sensor is placed on the right side, along with the power button. This phone still carries a 3.5 mm audio jack, offering Dolby Atmos-class audio quality, either via cable or compatible Bluetooth headset. But for speaker output, this phone still relies on one funnel at the bottom, aka not stereo.

Screen and User Interface

Lately we rarely find wide-screen phones if not flagship or entry-level phones. The flagship is certainly provided for the sultans who need a large screen for business and creativity, while at the entry level, this screen is used more to make it easier for new users to recognize Android functions and features so as not to complicate them.

And when the Samsung Galaxy M33 5G comes with a screen size like this, we can only appreciate it because maybe this is what is needed by those who have been using Samsung Android for a long time but are not willing to spend more money.

This 6.6-inch screen is then designed with a classic touch, using bangs to store the 8MP front camera at the top of the screen.

The screen panel carried is TFT LPS with FHD + resolution, which is 1080 x 2408 pixels with protection from Gorilla Glass 5. Honestly, if you don’t observe it closely, or compare it head to head with an AMOLED screen, the display on this cellphone is so bright and the default wallpaper looks maximal with colors that pop out. Given that the maximum refresh rate of this phone’s screen is 120 Hz, the M33 5G display looks comfortable to the eye.

Meanwhile, on the software side, the Samsung Galaxy M33 5G already uses the latest custom UI, namely One UI version 4.1 based on Android 12. It looks neater, cleaner with two layers of home screen by default.

A number of built-in applications related to the Samsung ecosystem, performance optimization, and image editors have been included. Not inferior to other Custom UI products. Some may be very much needed for today’s gadget users. Indicating that One UI 4.1 is more up to date with the needs of today’s cellphone users.

There is already an NFC function on this cellphone, so in terms of software it is future proof considering that in the future on Android 13 NFC will be used as a protocol to “chat” with more devices and applicable functions. It remains to be seen how Samsung will translate it into the new version of One UI in the future. Including the maximum utilization of 5G.

CPU, GPU and Memory

Samsung Galaxy M33 5G carries a chipset created by Samsung itself, namely the Exynos 1280 5G. This chipset has a 5nm fabrication. Allows for loading more features and functions, and is believed to be able to use power more efficiently.

Exynos 1280 carries an 8-core CPU. Consisting of 2 clusters, namely 1 cluster carrying 2 ARM Cortex-A78 cores with a clock speed of 2.4GHz for performance needs, and 1 other cluster carrying 6 Cortex-A55 cores with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz for lower needs.

On the graphics side, the Exynos 1280 carries the Mali-G68 GPU. This GPU is known as a GPU that occupies one level below the premium level. So in theory it is able to offer performance that is not far behind the premium series (flagship). This GPU also promises better power efficiency and machine learning.

On the memory side, this phone carries 6GB RAM with 128GB ROM. Enough to provide power on the multitasking side and quite large storage capacity. If it is not enough, we can add an additional microSD card without having to sacrifice one of our two nano SIM card numbers.

This is the lowest variant, because Samsung Indonesia also provides a higher variant with 8GB RAM, with the same ROM size at 128 GB.

Back to the phone we reviewed. When tried to play games, this phone was able to play Call of Duty Mobile at medium graphic settings with a very high frame rate. Spoiled us when playing several rounds.

As usual, we tested the CPU and GPU capabilities of this phone using two synthetic benchmark applications, namely GeekBench and Antutu. The results are quite promising, because the antutu number reached more than 400 thousand. Although it must be admitted that in more hectic use, we found one or two decreases in quality, especially in terms of frame rate.

In addition to a capable chipset for gaming and multitasking, the Galaxy M33 5G also carries a 5G modem that supports sub-6nm and mmWave 5G so that it is more likely to run on several 5G network specifications, including in Indonesia.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy M33 5G carries a 5000 mAh battery. The size that we often find in today’s cellphones because besides not making the battery bigger now, it will also be needed in the future for commercial use of 5G networks.

Accompanied by 25W Fast Charging fast charging technology, you can use this cellphone without having to run out of significant power. When it’s completely empty, we can take a break to be able to continue for hours. But, unfortunately, to be able to use this feature, we have to buy a special adapter separately.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy M33 5G carries 4 main cameras on the back and 1 front camera. The configuration of the 4 rear cameras consists of 1 50MP camera, 1 5MP ultrawide camera, and 2 2MP cameras each for depth and macro needs.

Meanwhile, for the front camera, there is 1 8MP camera that is included in the bangs design at the top center of the screen.

I don’t know if it’s because we haven’t reviewed a Samsung phone for a long time, but we noticed that on the Samsung M33 5G, the camera results reminded us of Samsung phones in the early 2010s, which tended to increase saturation. To the point that it was too sharp for our preferences.

Just to illustrate, this condition is shown by the color of the sky which suddenly turned very blue, when we briefly looked at the photo results in the viewfinder (phone). The same thing also applies when we try to enlarge the photo, aka zoom in 2x. Although the photo results are still dense, the colors produced are the same as normal shooting.

As usual, the features on the camera will determine how users can produce good photos, even resembling DSLRs. For example, the presence of portrait mode on this cellphone camera. Where the bokeh effect will be produced for the photo background that we can adjust the bokeh strength in real time.

Not only the main object in the form of humans, almost all objects can be used as photo objects with this portrait mode. Producing quite dramatic photos. But that’s not all that’s interesting. In the post-editing section, Samsung also offers a feature called the object eraser in the Photo Editor section.

On the video side, the Galaxy M33 5G camera is also capable of recording videos in popular resolutions and frame rates. Namely 1080p 60fps and 4K 30fps. It can be relied on to record a number of important moments, which can then be edited as desired, either in a smaller resolution, or cropping (4K video) into a vertical video without losing quality.

Conclusion

Mobile phone users who need an early 5G ready device with capable performance and also multitasking capabilities with a large battery and efficient power usage, can choose the Samsung Galaxy M33 5G. In the 4 million class, this phone also brings reliable camera capabilities in all conditions, as well as NFC which makes it easy to transact and control devices in the same ecosystem.
